Changes in oxidative stress markers in pediatric burn injury over a 1-week period

Abstract The importance of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis burn injuries has been shown various studies. Glutathione (GSH) and thiols have important roles antioxidant protection detoxification. study aimed to investigate relationship between pediatric trauma GSH thiol homeostasis. Twenty-nine children with thermal-burn 29 healthy peers are included this prospective randomized study. Children wounds 15–25% total body surface area (TBSA) were patient group. control group was created from both sexes. All 1–10 years age. Serum GSH, oxidized glutathione (GSSG), redox ratio (GSH/GSSG), thiol–disulfide (SS) tests conducted groups, changes admission day 7 analyzed patients injuries. mean age 4.09 ± 2.54 for 4.28 2.55 controls ( p > 0.05). Total (TT), native (SH), SS levels significantly lower than (TT = 291.69 7.93 vs 346.79 18.89 μmol/L, SH 259.39 7.90 297.64 12.81 16.15 4.68 24.58 5.76 μmol/L; < 0.001). SH/TT higher (89.05 3.00 85.93 3.01 SS/SH SS/TT ratios group, while had decreased (26.12 2.42 34.80 2.26) GSH/GSSG (1.69 0.12 3.05 0.29) increased GSSG (16.09 0.34 11.48 1.17, 0.001 all). level GSSG/SH GSSG/TT SH, TT, levels, Analysis serum TT homeostasis, might be useful order determine damage children.
